Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra expressed approval for the decision made by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta-led government to grant rehabilitation benefits to all slum settlements in the city existing until January 1, 2025. This move comes after a recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Malhotra highlighted that the BJP, in its pre-Assembly election Sankalp Patra released in January 2025, had pledged to provide rehabilitation to residents of all Delhi slum settlements. Within just 16 months, the BJP government has now fulfilled this commitment.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Delhi BJP President emphasized that the BJP stands by its promises, with the provision of rehabilitation benefits to all city slum settlements being a testament to this ongoing dedication. Chief Minister Gupta had earlier announced that residents of all slum clusters established in Delhi up to January 1, 2025, would be eligible for rehabilitation benefits. This decision was made during the 36th meeting of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), presided over by Chief Minister Gupta.
Delhi is home to 675 slum clusters spread across different districts, comprising around 306,000 slum dwellings. These clusters cover a total area of 804.5 hectares, with approximately half situated on DDA land. About 23% are on government/public sector or private land, while 22% are on land owned by entities like the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and DUSIB. The highest number of clusters is in South-East Delhi with 144, followed by North Delhi with 109, Central Delhi with 92, and West Delhi with 68. Other districts also have varying numbers of slum clusters, reflecting the widespread issue of slum settlements in the city.
