Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has introduced a government initiative to recycle damaged idols and provide an alternative for citizens who traditionally immerse such items in water bodies, including the polluted Yamuna. The Chief Minister encouraged public involvement in the program and requested suggestions for potential locations to establish collection centers for recycling idols. She emphasized the importance of respectfully recycling cherished idols as a significant step towards a cleaner and culturally aware Viksit Delhi.
The initiative received positive feedback from the public, with individuals expressing support for the idea of designated centers for depositing broken idols in a respectful manner. One social media user praised the government’s efforts, describing the initiative as a thoughtful gesture towards honoring faith, culture, and religious sentiments. The move aligns with the vision of Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu, who aims to enhance sustainability, inclusion, culture, innovation, economic growth, and compassion as key pillars of Delhi’s future development.
Lieutenant Governor Sandhu highlighted the importance of governance being responsive, accessible, and humane during a recent event at JNU’s School of International Studies. He emphasized key issues such as air pollution, cleaning the Yamuna River, rejuvenating water bodies, effective waste management, sustainable mobility, and increasing green cover as central to Delhi’s urban vision. Sandhu stressed the need not only to clean but also to restore the Yamuna as a vibrant ecological and cultural lifeline for the city.
