Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has renamed the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation as the Indraprastha Virasat Punarvikas Nigam (IVPN) to safeguard the historic, cultural, and architectural legacy of Old Delhi. The move aims to blend the area’s historical identity with modern civic amenities. An Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the newly named corporation was chaired by the Chief Minister, focusing on holistic redevelopment, heritage conservation, civic infrastructure expansion, and tourism promotion.
The meeting, attended by Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, Vice Chairman Ashish Sood, Managing Director Sandeep Kumar, and senior officials, prioritized the redevelopment of Chandni Chowk. Chief Minister Gupta emphasized the importance of reflecting the market’s historical essence, traditional character, and cultural significance in its design. Additionally, directives were issued for the creation of functional public toilets and a new entry point for the historic Town Hall from the Chandni Chowk side to enhance its heritage value.
Efforts were made to balance heritage conservation with commercial activities, ensuring the interests of local traders and shopkeepers were safeguarded. The Chief Minister stressed the need to consider the perspectives of markets, tourists, shoppers, and residents in the Chandni Chowk redevelopment. Plans were outlined for a control room to assist tourists, organized parking facilities, and the integrated development of the Hanuman Temple and surrounding area as part of the broader project.
To maintain Old Delhi’s essence, the initiative will focus on heritage conservation, urban development, waste management, traffic control, tourism facilities, and environmental sustainability. Chief Minister Gupta highlighted the significance of preserving the city’s historic heritage for its cultural identity and future generations. The objective is to ensure that all developmental endeavors uphold Old Delhi’s historical charm, traditional values, and architectural splendor.
