Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is set to inaugurate the “Khelo Delhi – Delhi Khel Mahakumbh” event on Friday, inspired by Khelo India, to enhance the sports culture in the capital. The initiative aims to provide a platform for Delhi’s talented individuals. Education Minister Ashish Sood recently hosted a discussion on the upcoming sports event, emphasizing the importance of offering the right opportunities to showcase talent.
More than 50 sports influencers, Arjuna Awardees, fitness coaches, and media representatives engaged in the interactive session. The event will kick off with competitions in seven major sports disciplines, such as football, basketball, volleyball, and kabaddi, across 17 key stadiums in Delhi. Minister Sood revealed that over 16,000 athletes have already registered, with a target of exceeding 30,000 participants during the month-long festival.
The formal inauguration is scheduled at Chhatrasal Stadium, led by Chief Minister Gupta. The opening ceremony will witness a parade by para-athletes from Delhi. Minister Sood highlighted the event’s focus on women athletes, aiming to ensure their safety and active involvement. The initiative also aims to promote discipline among youth and deter them from negative influences like substance abuse.
The Mahakumbh seeks to identify emerging talent and support their progression to national and international levels. Cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has been appointed as the Brand Ambassador to inspire young athletes and boost sports enthusiasm among the youth. The event is expected to have a positive impact on women’s participation in sports, fostering a culture of empowerment and inclusivity.
