Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta led a review meeting of the Kanwar Committee to evaluate arrangements for the upcoming 2026 pilgrimage. The registration process for Kanwar camp panels is set to commence by July 1, as decided during the meeting. Existing committees were advised to be informed in advance about necessary documents and audit requirements to ensure a smooth application process.
The Revenue Department reported that 308 Kanwar camps were effectively managed in Delhi last year. Notably, funds were directly transferred to the bank accounts of Kanwar committees for the first time last year. This streamlined approach, along with the introduction of a single-window system, enhanced transparency, addressed operational issues, and received positive feedback from committee members and the public.
In attendance at the meeting were Art and Culture Minister and Kanwar Committee Chairman Kapil Mishra, along with committee member-MLAs and senior officials from various departments. Updates on preparations were presented by representatives from the Revenue Department, Delhi Police, Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Jal Board, DUSIB, and other departments.
During discussions, Kanwar committee representatives expressed concerns about the adequacy of the current grant amount for larger camps due to increased costs for tents and essential arrangements. Some committees proposed an increase in the grant amount or a return to the previous system where the government directly provided tents. In response, Chief Minister Gupta assured that all suggestions would be positively considered, including the possibility of raising the grant amount if necessary.
The meeting also addressed challenges encountered in the previous year and the recommendations put forth. Suggestions included enhancing the quantity and quality of mobile toilets, ensuring regular cleaning, providing continuous medical services, arranging sufficient drinking water, ensuring gas cylinder availability, timely installation of hoardings and publicity materials, and preparing in advance to address waterlogging during the monsoon season. Chief Minister Gupta instructed officials to complete drainage improvements and other essential works in areas where waterlogging was reported last year. Additionally, she emphasized the need for round-the-clock medical facilities at all Kanwar camps.
