Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced a new measure to combat dust pollution by requiring the use of high-density dust screens at construction and demolition sites. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee has set a minimum thickness of 100 GSM for green nets at these sites, with immediate compliance mandated for all project proponents. This decision aims to address the significant role of construction activities in contributing to dust pollution.
The directive, following guidelines from the Commission for Air Quality Management, emphasizes the importance of dust pollution control and inspection procedures at construction projects. Minister Sirsa highlighted the government’s comprehensive approach to tackling air pollution in Delhi through policy changes, scientific interventions, and technology-driven monitoring and enforcement measures.
The new specification fills a crucial gap in compliance by setting a standard for the green nets used as dust barriers. By stipulating a minimum of 100 GSM, the Delhi government aims to ensure that these barriers are not just symbolic but genuinely effective in reducing particulate matter emissions at the source. Minister Sirsa emphasized the practicality, measurability, and enforceability of dust mitigation efforts at construction sites with the introduction of high-density dust screens.
In line with its commitment to visible anti-pollution actions, the Delhi government is also progressing on Dust Portal 2.0, a centralized monitoring system for construction and demolition sites in the city. Mandatory registration on this portal is expected to enhance oversight, compliance tracking, and enforcement transparency. The implementation of 100 GSM green nets is anticipated to enhance dust-control compliance efforts on the ground and complement the government’s broader pollution reduction strategies.
