The Delhi government plans to bolster the public transport system in the national capital by introducing 2,800 air-conditioned low-floor electric buses under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme. These buses, consisting of 1,400 nine-metre and 1,400 12-metre electric buses, aim to enhance public transport accessibility and last-mile connectivity, especially in underserved areas. Currently, Delhi operates nearly 4,300 electric buses, with a target to increase this number to 7,500 by the year-end.
The proposed fleet expansion aligns with the government’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility and cleaner public transportation. It aims to create a well-rounded fleet capable of serving high-density corridors and neighborhood connectivity needs. Additionally, the government plans to introduce 3,330 more electric buses in the next phase, including 500 seven-metre buses, to strengthen feeder services and last-mile connectivity across the city.
Delhi’s Transport Minister highlighted the government’s efforts to modernize public transport infrastructure and promote environmentally sustainable transportation under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s leadership. The induction of electric buses will be accompanied by the development of necessary charging and power infrastructure at bus depots to support large-scale electrification. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce vehicular emissions, enhance air quality, and provide residents with a cleaner and more reliable public transport system.
