As educationist and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk continues his fast-unto-death for the 19th day, the Delhi High Court has instructed the Centre and the Delhi government to ensure daily clinical monitoring of his health. This directive includes undertaking any necessary medical interventions to address any deterioration in his condition. Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre and the Delhi government, informed the court that Wangchuk’s health is currently under regular observation by government doctors and medical experts. The court emphasized the importance of monitoring Wangchuk’s health daily and providing any required medical assistance based on doctors’ recommendations.
The Delhi High Court stressed the significance of preserving the life of every citizen and directed the government authorities to make all possible efforts to safeguard Wangchuk’s well-being. During the proceedings, the court expressed its desire for Wangchuk to undergo regular examinations by government doctors and receive necessary medication as per medical advice.
Advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking urgent medical intervention for Wangchuk. The PIL urged the Centre and the Delhi government to transfer Wangchuk to a government hospital and administer essential treatment, including force-feeding with a liquid diet containing vital nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to save his life. The court disposed of the PIL after the Centre assured daily medical monitoring and required interventions.
