The Delhi High Court has raised concerns over the Wrestling Federation of India’s decision to declare wrestler Vinesh Phogat ineligible for domestic competitions. The court urged the Centre to find ways to allow Phogat to participate in the upcoming Asian Games selection trials. Phogat, an accomplished wrestler, faced exclusion due to revised eligibility criteria linked to her maternity break and return to the sport.
The court emphasized that motherhood should not hinder an athlete’s career comeback, especially considering Phogat’s international success. Phogat’s lawyer argued that the revised criteria unfairly prevented her participation in the Asian Games trials. The court also questioned the federation’s approach, particularly regarding Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024 final.
The Delhi High Court sought clarification from the Centre on actions taken following the notice issued to Phogat. The court inquired whether the Sports Ministry had reviewed the Wrestling Federation’s new selection policy. The government assured it had not independently barred Phogat and suggested considering relaxation provisions under the Sports Authority of India framework for special cases.
In response to the court’s directives, the Centre and the Wrestling Federation were asked to collaborate on facilitating Phogat’s participation. The court proposed forming an expert panel to assess Phogat’s eligibility for the trials. This development follows a previous ruling denying Phogat interim relief to compete in the Asian Games trials, pending further hearings.
