The Delhi High Court has taken up Olympian wrestler Sushil Kumar’s bail plea regarding the 2021 murder case of junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar. The court has asked for a comprehensive status report from the Delhi Police and scheduled further hearings for May 4. Kumar challenged a previous court’s decision rejecting his bail application.
Sushil Kumar’s counsel argued that since public witnesses have been examined, he should be granted bail. However, the Delhi Police’s Additional Public Prosecutor stated that witness examination is still ongoing and requested more time for a detailed report. The father of the deceased wrestler also opposed Kumar’s bail plea.
Sushil Kumar, among others, is accused of assaulting Dhankar and his friends in May 2021 over an alleged property dispute at Delhi’s Chhatrasal Stadium. Dhankar later died from injuries sustained in the incident. The Supreme Court had previously canceled Kumar’s bail and directed him to surrender, with Kumar remaining in custody since June 2021, except for brief periods for specific reasons.
