Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu reiterated the importance of a cleaner and revitalized Yamuna, affirming the government’s strong commitment to achieving tangible and sustainable improvements on the ground. Sandhu, following a meeting led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Yamuna rejuvenation, highlighted initiatives such as converting dairy waste into gas and manure. The meeting emphasized a collaborative approach among Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh governments, along with concerned ministries, under an integrated action plan.
Sandhu mentioned key steps like an upcoming MoU between the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the National Dairy Development Board to repurpose dairy waste, expedited desilting with silt’s commercial utilization, and rigorous monitoring of sewage and industrial discharge for measurable results. Home Minister Shah noted significant progress in desilting drains flowing into the Yamuna, with 97% of the targeted silt removal already completed and the rest to be cleared by June 15.
Union Minister Shah highlighted the construction of 129 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, with plans for an additional 59 STPs by 2027. He stressed the need for close monitoring of STPs’ operations, industrial waste management, and drain discharges to ensure effective environmental management.
