Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu, quoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, advised young management students at IIM Rohtak to have self-belief as a foundation for becoming trustworthy leaders. Sandhu emphasized that leadership is rooted in conviction, adaptability, and the ability to inspire trust, rather than just exerting authority.
Sandhu highlighted the unique responsibilities arising from India’s development journey, mentioning the country’s focus on infrastructure, digital systems, manufacturing, financial inclusion, and meeting the aspirations of its young population. He stressed the importance of individuals who can think holistically across various sectors, given the increasing overlap between public and private domains.
According to Sandhu, modern management goes beyond technical solutions to encompass judgement, requiring the skill to balance conflicting priorities, navigate uncertainty, and make decisions in situations where efficiency and sustainability may not align. He underscored that judgement evolves through exposure to complexity and diverse perspectives, rather than through direct teaching.
Addressing incoming students, Sandhu urged them to not only prepare for their careers but also to broaden their perspectives during their time at the institute. He advised them to focus on intellectual discipline, engage with complexity, and develop decision-making skills that consider long-term implications beyond immediate outcomes.
