Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu initiated the “Jal Sanchay Abhiyaan” by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to revive 101 water bodies in the city. The focus of the first phase is on ecological restoration through deep desilting and catchment clearance to enhance groundwater recharge during the monsoon season. Aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for long-term water security, the initiative aims to restore Delhi’s ‘blue lungs’ and bolster the city’s ecological resilience.
Sandhu highlighted the significance of revitalizing Delhi’s traditional water bodies to ensure sustainable water security, groundwater recharge, and ecological equilibrium. This effort is not just about aesthetics but a dedicated approach to ecological restoration and sustainable urban progress. The DDA has identified 101 water bodies for immediate restoration under Phase I, with a target completion date set for August 30.
In a directive, Sandhu stressed the importance of adhering to timelines and maintaining high execution standards at all restoration sites. The commitment remains strong towards reclaiming Delhi’s aquatic heritage and establishing a greener, more water-secure, and ecologically resilient capital. Encouraging public participation through ‘Jan Bhagidari,’ the Lieutenant Governor urged residents to contribute to a greener, water-secure #ViksitDilli.
The inauguration ceremony took place at District Park, Paschim Vihar in West Delhi, with the presence of Area MLA Karnail Singh and DDA Vice Chairman N. Saravana Kumar. The first phase of the initiative targets the rejuvenation of 101 water bodies spread across approximately 155 hectares (383 acres), including specific zones like Dwarka, South, Rohini, and Narela. Singh emphasized the importance of preserving water bodies for future generations, hailing the campaign as a crucial step towards a healthier and greener Delhi.
