Delhi-NCR is set to experience severe weather conditions this week, with temperatures expected to soar to nearly 46 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). An orange alert has been issued for the region, cautioning residents about prolonged heatwave-like conditions in the upcoming days. The IMD has highlighted that Delhi, along with Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, will face intense heat during this period.
The Safdarjung observatory, Delhi’s official weather station, recorded a peak temperature of 45.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, significantly surpassing the seasonal average by 4.7 degrees. Other areas in the city witnessed even higher temperatures, with Ridge station hitting 46.5 degrees Celsius, Ayanagar at 45.5 degrees, and Lodhi Road reaching 45.2 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the extreme heat has adversely affected the air quality in Delhi, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) rising to 208, the worst since April 28, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has enforced Stage 1 restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in response to the deteriorating pollution levels. Earlier this week, Delhi encountered its hottest day of the season, with temperatures nearing 44 degrees Celsius in various areas. Meteorologists have identified Tuesday as the fourth heatwave day of the year for the city, following similar conditions experienced on April 23, 24, and 25. The IMD has predicted temperatures around 44 degrees Celsius until May 25, accompanied by strong surface winds in the afternoon and evening. Authorities advise the public to minimize outdoor activities during peak daytime hours, stay hydrated, and be vigilant against heat-related ailments.
