Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) can anticipate relief from the recent heatwave as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds in the upcoming days.
The IMD forecasts intermittent rain and thunderstorm activity in Delhi-NCR from June 18 to June 21, with partly cloudy skies and scattered showers expected across the region. Despite the changing weather, no warnings or advisories have been issued by the IMD so far.
On Friday, Delhi’s maximum temperature is projected to range between 40 to 42 degrees Celsius, with minimum temperatures hovering around 27 to 29 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists expect daytime temperatures to be slightly above normal levels while minimum temperatures will remain close to seasonal averages.
Surface winds are anticipated to predominantly blow from the west, with speeds reaching up to 15 kmph in the morning, 20 kmph in the afternoon, and peaking at nearly 25 kmph during the evening and night. The IMD also warns of light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, dust storms, and gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 kmph and occasional gusts up to 60 kmph.
Weather experts suggest that the combination of cloud cover, rainfall, and strong winds will help regulate temperatures and reduce the risk of heatwaves in the region. However, elevated humidity levels in some areas may lead to occasional discomfort.
Despite the weather changes, Delhi’s air quality remains in the “poor” category, with several monitoring stations reporting elevated Air Quality Index (AQI) readings. Stations like Anand Vihar, Pusa, Aya Nagar, and others show varying levels of poor air quality.
