A man convicted in a 1998 murder case, Mohammad Nawab (52), failed to surrender after his appeal was rejected by the Delhi High Court in 2025. He was apprehended by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police. Nawab, a resident of Ranjeet Nagar, was convicted in a murder case at Daryaganj police station and sentenced to life imprisonment. Despite being released on bail, he absconded when the High Court upheld his conviction and ordered him to surrender at Tihar Jail.
Nawab, declared a parole jumper by jail authorities, did not comply with the court’s directive. The incident dates back to November 29–30, 1998, when Nawab allegedly attacked a rickshaw puller near Delhi Gate in Daryaganj. He assaulted the victim after the rickshaw puller refused to take him home, leading to the victim’s death due to severe injuries sustained during the assault.
An eyewitness, Harpal Singh, alerted the police after Nawab’s assault on the victim. Police officials promptly arrived at the scene and apprehended Nawab as he tried to flee. The victim was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Subsequently, Nawab was convicted under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced to life imprisonment after a trial.
A team from the Central Range of Crime Branch, under the leadership of Inspector Mahipal Singh and ACP Satendra Mohan, was assigned the task of locating and arresting Nawab. Through extensive fieldwork and intelligence gathering, the team tracked Nawab to the Kasabpura area of Sadar Bazaar in Old Delhi. He was eventually captured in the Ranjeet Nagar area while en route to meet his family members.
Nawab, who had been operating a butcher shop in Kasabpura, had been evading authorities since the dismissal of his appeal. He has now been placed in Tihar Jail. Additionally, officials disclosed that Nawab had prior involvements in three cases under the Arms Act, resulting in convictions in all instances.
