Delhi Police’s Crime Branch recently uncovered an organized honey-trap and extortion scheme where culprits posed as police officials to extort money from victims on dating apps like Tinder and QuackQuack. Four individuals have been apprehended in connection with the case. The arrests were made based on a complaint filed under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The operation, led by the Crime Branch’s ER-II unit, was initiated following intelligence inputs about a group engaging in honey-trapping and extortion under the guise of law enforcement. The accused were intercepted near Kalyan Jewellers in Rajouri Garden after a trap was set up by the police team. One suspect, Sushil Kumar, was caught wearing a fake police uniform during the operation.
During interrogation, Sushil Kumar revealed the identities of his accomplices as Deepak alias Sajan, Neeraj Tyagi alias Dhiru, Vinod Pandit, and Kirti. The arrested individuals, including Deepak, Vinod, and Neeraj, were involved in creating fake profiles on dating apps to ensnare victims, leading them to isolated locations where they staged fake police raids to extort money.
Efforts are ongoing to locate other gang members, Gagan and Pooja alias Kirti. The gang’s modus operandi involved creating fake female profiles to lure victims, orchestrating fake police raids, and coercing victims into paying large sums as “settlement” amounts. Delhi Police have cautioned the public to exercise caution when engaging with strangers online and to report any suspicious activities promptly.
