After enduring scorching heatwave conditions with temperatures exceeding 45°C, Delhi residents experienced relief with a sudden drop in mercury over the past 48 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a notable cooling of 7 to 9 degrees Celsius within just one day, alleviating the intense summer heat. Areas like The Ridge, Aya Nagar, Palam, Lodhi Road, and Safdarjung witnessed a substantial decrease in temperatures from the peak heatwave levels recorded on May 27.
The sharp decline in temperatures was attributed to a Western Disturbance affecting northwest India, as confirmed by IMD officials. This weather system brought strong winds, cloud cover, and light rainfall in some regions, contributing to the dissipation of the heatwave. The sudden cooling, accompanied by light showers and gusty winds, brought relief to citizens, particularly vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, and outdoor workers who were facing heat-related health issues.
IMD has forecast pleasant weather in the coming days, with maximum temperatures expected to range between 35-38°C before a gradual increase. The improved weather conditions following the abrupt cooling have also led to a marginal enhancement in air quality and a reduction in heatstroke cases at hospitals. Additionally, the excessive power demand due to air conditioner usage during the heatwave is anticipated to decrease slightly.
Despite the temporary relief brought by the recent weather changes, meteorologists caution that May and June in Delhi can still be unpredictable. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, even as the weather remains cooler compared to earlier in the week.
