Under the leadership of Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has successfully planted more than 6.62 lakh saplings, including 37,000 trees and over 6.25 lakh shrubs, achieving nearly 30% of its target of 23 lakh plants in the ongoing Mega Plantation drive. Sandhu, who also chairs the DDA, emphasized ecological restoration and green infrastructure expansion.
Constant monitoring of the planted plants to ensure their survival has been directed by the L-G to the departments involved. The current plantation initiative, running from early July to mid-September 2026, focuses on planting native and climate-resilient species to enhance biodiversity and strengthen carbon sequestration potential.
The drive aims to improve air quality, groundwater recharge, and urban liveability by enhancing microclimatic regulation and ecological connectivity across Delhi’s green systems. Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the Mission 70 lakh plantation drive, including the DDA’s 23 lakh plantation drive under the ‘Ek Ped Maa ke Naam’ campaign on July 7. The DDA is collaborating with various groups to turn the plantation into a people’s movement, encouraging public participation and shared ownership of Delhi’s green assets.
The plantation initiative spans multiple locations in Delhi, including DDA parks, Ridge areas, and biodiversity parks, with the goal of fostering environmental sustainability and habitat creation.
