The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has confirmed 1,118 Ebola cases, with 291 deaths, according to the latest update from the DRC government. Among the cases, 122 individuals have recovered, and 408 patients are currently receiving care, while the case fatality rate stands at 26 percent.
Epidemiological surveillance efforts have identified 138 suspected cases, with a contact follow-up rate of 77.1 percent. The outbreak’s epicenter remains in the eastern Ituri province, with no new transmissions reported in the South Kivu province since May 26. Surveillance and response activities are ongoing in affected areas.
Despite the increasing case numbers in the region, the global risk from the Ebola outbreak in Africa is deemed low by the World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The WHO has noted a significant expansion in treatment and laboratory capacities to address the outbreak effectively.
DRC President Felix Tshisekedi announced plans to visit the outbreak’s epicenter in Ituri province to oversee response operations on the ground. He emphasized the need for regional cooperation, including prevention measures, surveillance, and prompt information-sharing to contain the outbreak.
