The Department of Posts achieved a significant milestone by booking its first online order via the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). This order, facilitated on January 13, was managed by the Department as a Logistics Service Provider and successfully delivered on January 15.
The inaugural order was placed by UdyamWell, an ONDC-enabled initiative supporting Bharatpreneurs, including artisans, farmers, and rural entrepreneurs. This advancement signifies the Department of Posts’ commitment to providing digitally enabled and interoperable logistics services nationwide.
With this integration, sellers utilizing ONDC-enabled buyer applications can now opt for the Department of Posts for parcel pickup, booking, transportation, and delivery. Leveraging its extensive postal network, the Department reaches even the most remote areas of the country.
Currently, the Department of Posts operates on ONDC through the “Click & Book” model, enabling sellers to request pickups online, choose the Department of Posts as their logistics partner, and have parcels picked up from their location. Postage charges are collected during pickup, and consignments are digitally tracked and delivered using technology-driven logistics processes.
Officials anticipate that the Department of Posts’ inclusion as a Logistics Service Provider on ONDC will enhance India’s digital commerce ecosystem. This move is expected to bolster the national digital e-commerce landscape, fostering inclusive participation of MSMEs and small sellers nationwide.
