The Department of Posts has initiated drone-based mail and parcel delivery services along the Mandi-Rehardhar route in Himachal Pradesh. This move, led by Union Minister of Communications and DoNER Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, aims to enhance postal services in challenging terrains. The introduction of drones is part of a broader strategy to boost last-mile connectivity in hilly regions.
Scindia expressed his excitement about this technological advancement in postal services on social media platform X. He highlighted that the drone delivery service will significantly reduce the time taken for deliveries in difficult terrains. The project’s inception was based on valuable feedback from Gramin Dak Sevaks and Postal Assistants, making it a sustainable and efficient solution.
Aligning with the government’s tech-driven governance vision, Scindia emphasized the importance of leveraging technology to strengthen postal services. The newly operational drone route connects Mandi Head Post Office with Rehardhar Branch Post Office, covering a distance of approximately 12 km. This initiative is set to expand with around 150 drone delivery routes planned in Himachal Pradesh and Assam over the next few months.
The Ministry of Communications stated that the drone system will offer improved real-time tracking, reduce delays due to terrain challenges, and provide a more eco-friendly logistics solution for postal operations. By enhancing service delivery in remote and mountainous areas, this initiative aims to enhance access to essential postal services, promoting social and economic inclusivity.
