The Department of Posts will rationalize certain international letter post services starting January 1, 2026. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency, accountability, and customer-friendliness by aligning with global best practices and decisions by the Universal Postal Union (UPU). Services to be discontinued include registered Small Packet service, Outward Small Packet service, and Surface Letter Mail Service among others.
The decision to discontinue these services is driven by challenges like limited tracking, extended delivery times, and evolving customs and security requirements in destination countries. The Ministry of Communications stated that this move is intended to improve service quality without compromising options for exporters or customers.
Following the rationalization, registration for documents only, booked in Air mode, will still be available under specific categories. Provisions for Blind Literature and M-bags will remain unchanged, with exemptions for blind persons or organizations. The Department emphasized that M-bags will continue to adhere to UPU rules concerning weight limits and country-specific acceptance conditions.
To assist exporters and customers, the Department of Posts already provides reliable alternatives for sending goods abroad. Customers are encouraged to utilize services like the International Tracked Packet Service (ITPS) and other international parcel services for their shipping needs.
