Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting an all-party meeting to discuss proposed laws on delimitation and amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA). O’Brien expressed concerns over the nature of these laws, describing them as “draconian.” He highlighted the importance of parliamentary transparency and urged the PM to avoid last-minute tactics in introducing bills.
O’Brien pointed out previous instances where bills were rushed through Parliament without adequate scrutiny. He emphasized the significance of delimitation in shaping India’s political landscape and democracy. The MP urged the government to ensure a transparent and inclusive process in enacting such crucial legislation, citing past legislative failures as cautionary examples.
The MP raised specific concerns regarding the FCRA Amendment Bill, warning against potential negative impacts on institutions serving marginalized communities. O’Brien highlighted the risk of excessive executive control over organizations working in education and health sectors. He underscored the need to protect constitutional rights and uphold the principles enshrined in Articles 19 and 26.
