Dhaka Reflects on US Relations Amid Historical Criticisms

Dhaka acknowledges the current partnership with the United States but does not overlook Washington’s actions during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. In December 1971, the US deployed Task Force 74, including the USS Enterprise, to the Bay of Bengal, seen as support for Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistani War’s critical phase.

Criticism surrounds the former US President Richard Nixon’s administration for supporting Pakistan despite evidence of atrocities in Bangladesh. This stance, influenced by geopolitical interests like the Cold War and relations with China, is considered a significant moral failure in American foreign policy. Bangladesh’s recent celebration of US ties has reignited debates about historical perspectives and diplomatic relationships.

The celebration at Bangladesh’s parliament faced backlash for allegedly overlooking the country’s past struggles. Leftist groups and intellectuals raised concerns about growing American influence and criticized agreements seen as against Bangladesh’s sovereignty. The report also condemns Jamaat-e-Islami’s role in the 1971 Liberation War, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging history without selective memory or revisionism.
