Veteran Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has called on Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to conduct a thorough investigation into alleged irregularities in the sale and distribution of fertilizers in the state. Singh highlighted that farmers in various districts are reportedly purchasing fertilizers like DAP, SSP, and other complex types at prices exceeding the printed Maximum Retail Price (MRP).
According to Singh, complaints from farmers and farmer organizations indicate that outdated fertilizer stocks are being retailed through Point of Sale (POS) machines and e-token systems at revised and inflated rates. He emphasized that this practice of selling old stock at elevated prices is financially burdening farmers.
Singh emphasized that the issue goes beyond price hikes and involves issues of transparency and farmers’ rights. He underscored that as per the Fertilizer (Control) Order, 1985, and the Essential Commodities Act, fertilizers must not be sold above their designated MRP. Singh cited an instance where a 50-kg fertilizer bag, previously priced around Rs 1,450, is now allegedly being sold at approximately Rs 2,100 in certain locations.
Singh has urged for a comprehensive statewide inquiry into the distribution and sale of fertilizers, along with district-level verification of complaints and strict actions against implicated officials and dealers. This is the second instance this week where Singh has raised concerns with the state government regarding fertilizer malpractices.
