Director Nachiket Samant shared insights into his choice to portray actress Huma Qureshi’s character as mute and deaf in the upcoming film “Baby Do Die Do.” The film’s concept originated from a simple idea of exploring a professional female assassin in Hindi cinema, as Nachiket explained, “We were just riffing one day – has there ever been a Hindi film about a professional female assassin? We couldn’t think of one. That gap was instantly exciting, so we went after that character, and the world kind of built itself around her.”
Mumbai plays a crucial role in the narrative, shaping the unique modus operandi of assassin Baby Karmarkar amidst its bustling crowds. Nachiket elaborated, “She kills and disappears into the crowd. That’s what’s so unique about her – it’s as much about the escape as it is about the kill.”
Discussing the unconventional portrayal of Baby as a mute and deaf contract killer, Nachiket emphasized that while the larger-than-life concept felt organic, the believability of the character hinged on Huma’s performance. He praised Huma’s ability to infuse authenticity into the role, stating, “All the rootedness, Huma brought. It’s one thing to write a fantastic character – you still need a solid actor to bring it to life.”
The director highlighted the creative challenge of stripping dialogue from the character, noting, “Huma’s a fully tayyar actor, but this time, suddenly taking away her dialogues seemed like the perfect challenge. It forced her somewhere I hadn’t seen her go, and she rose to it completely.” “Baby Do Die Do,” starring Huma Qureshi, Sikander Kher, Chunky Pandey, Seema Pahwa, Rachit Singh, and Marudhar Shekhawat in key roles, is produced by Saqib Saleem under Saleem Siblings in association with Pune 04 Films and is set to release on 3rd July this year.
