In a significant move before the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) officially joined the DMK-led alliance. This marks the first time the DMDK has aligned with the DMK since its establishment in 2005.
DMDK’s general secretary, Premalatha Vijayakant, met with Chief Minister and DMK president M. K. Stalin at the DMK headquarters in Chennai to solidify the alliance. This meeting holds political importance, indicating a shift in the state’s electoral landscape.
Premalatha mentioned that the allocation of Assembly seats to the DMDK will be determined through discussions with a committee set up by the DMK for alliance negotiations. She emphasized that seat-sharing details will be finalized after thorough talks with the DMK’s team.
Stalin welcomed the DMDK into the alliance, expressing confidence that their inclusion would bolster the coalition and support the continuity of DMK governance in Tamil Nadu. He conveyed this sentiment through a social media post, encouraging the party’s contribution to the state’s progress.
Sources suggest that the DMDK might receive a Rajya Sabha seat as part of the agreement. Premalatha stated that the formal announcement regarding the Upper House position would be made by Stalin at an appropriate time. She highlighted that the decision to align with the DMK had the backing of a majority of DMDK members.
