The son of DMK MLA G.V. Markandeyan, Akshay, has raised concerns over his father’s arrest, alleging that the police subjected the legislator to a lengthy interrogation. Akshay claimed that despite the speech in question being only about five minutes long, his father was questioned for nearly 13 hours, which he deemed unjustified, especially considering Markandeyan’s health issues.
Akshay further asserted that his father, who suffers from diabetes and heart-related ailments, should not have been subjected to such prolonged questioning. He also accused the police of pressuring the MLA during interrogation to make statements aligning with the ruling party’s political narrative. The family intends to challenge the police’s actions in court, according to Akshay.
Referring to the arrest’s broader political implications, Akshay criticized the ruling TVK government for allegedly attempting to stifle opposition voices. He likened the State Legislative Assembly to the “brain” of the democratic system, emphasizing the role of legislators in ensuring its proper functioning. Akshay warned that restricting elected representatives’ activities could weaken the democratic process, allowing the ruling party to dominate legislative proceedings without effective opposition.
