One of the doctors allegedly assaulted by Shiv Sena leader Ramesh Mhatre at a hospital in Maharashtra’s Thane district has resigned, expressing fear for his safety. The doctor, speaking to NDTV, mentioned feeling deeply shaken by the incident and stated that he no longer felt secure working at the hospital. The assault took place at Shastri Nagar Hospital on July 6, leading to the doctor’s decision to leave the city permanently.
The altercation began when two doctors advised a newborn’s family to move the infant to another medical facility due to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit being full. This advice was given to ensure proper treatment for the baby. Subsequently, the family contacted local Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who, along with his supporters, confronted and physically assaulted the doctors and hospital staff. CCTV footage of the incident showed the violence that ensued, with one doctor sustaining injuries.
Despite the assault, Mhatre defended his actions, denying that he assaulted the woman doctor and justifying his behavior as necessary intervention. He claimed to have pushed away her phone as she was unresponsive. Mhatre refused to apologize, stating that his actions were in line with the teachings of Shiv Sena’s founder. Police have filed a case against Mhatre and five others, leading to his arrest and subsequent hospitalization due to health complaints.
