Dr PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, stressed the need for continuous monitoring of the El Nino situation. He highlighted the importance of assessing the impact of the monsoon, especially in vulnerable districts, and taking necessary remedial actions in coordination with states.
In a high-level meeting, Dr Mishra directed officials to ensure adequate fodder availability and develop plans for fodder, emphasizing regular monitoring with the states. He also prioritized ensuring sufficient drinking water in vulnerable districts and optimal reservoir water utilization.
The meeting, attended by secretaries and senior officials from over 15 ministries, reviewed preparedness measures for the kharif season and potential impacts of El Nino on various sectors of the economy. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials presented the rainfall situation up to July 7 and highlighted a delay in the monsoon onset in certain states.
Officials reported a deficit of (-)12 per cent in all-India rainfall till July 7, despite above-normal monsoon in the first week of July. The Agriculture Secretary presented preparedness plans for the kharif season, including campaigns for crop insurance and credit coverage in vulnerable states.
Various departments were tasked with assessing and ensuring the availability of essential resources like fodder, water, and healthcare services. The Department of Consumer Affairs also provided updates on retail prices and stock levels of essential commodities.
