As India intensifies its crackdown on narcotic syndicates, drug smugglers are turning their focus to the Punjab border, particularly using drones for smuggling operations. The India-Pakistan border in Punjab has long been a hotspot for smuggling activities involving narcotics, arms, and ammunition. Security agencies in India are increasingly concerned about the technological advancements being employed by these smugglers, with drones now being used to provide real-time surveillance during smuggling operations.
These drones equipped with live video capabilities allow smugglers to monitor Indian security forces’ movements and evade detection effectively. Additionally, the drones are satellite-enabled, enabling smugglers to penetrate deep into Indian territory while minimizing interception risks. Intelligence reports suggest that the use of satellite-enabled drones indicates the involvement of the Pakistani establishment in aiding smugglers with advanced technology for foolproof operations.
The Border Security Force (BSF) is facing significant challenges posed by these technologically advanced drones, which constantly outpace the security forces’ capabilities. To combat this threat effectively, a combination of advanced technology and ground-level operations is deemed necessary. Disrupting the network of smugglers within Punjab, who recruit local youth to distribute contraband in markets, is crucial to impeding drug smuggling operations.
Authorities emphasize the importance of tracking down operatives tasked with retrieving payloads dropped by drones to disrupt the smuggling chain effectively. Smugglers are deploying both highly advanced drones and lower-tech decoy drones to facilitate the infiltration of larger payloads. Over the past six months, security agencies have seized hundreds of drones sent by Pakistan-based narcotic smugglers, highlighting the scale of the issue.
Notably, these drones are not only used for narcotics but also for smuggling arms and ammunition, including pistols and assault rifles, primarily for local gangsters and supporters of the Khalistan movement. The ISI’s involvement in pushing Khalistani elements to escalate operations underscores the broader security implications of these smuggling activities.
