After Dutch players Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo scored twice each in a World Cup match, they expressed pride in matching the achievement of legendary countrymen Robben and Van Persie. In 2014, Robben and Van Persie led the Netherlands to a 5-1 victory over Spain with remarkable performances. Brobbey and Gakpo replicated this feat in the FIFA World Cup 2026 match against Sweden, securing a 5-1 win for the Netherlands.
Brobbey, making his first start in the tournament, scored two goals within 17 minutes, following in the footsteps of Dutch icons Robben and Van Persie. Gakpo, on the other hand, netted two goals in nine minutes after halftime, sealing the victory and etching his name in the record books.
Gakpo, who was 15 during the 2014 World Cup, vividly remembers watching the Netherlands’ triumph over Spain. He reflected on the tense match and the team’s brilliant performance, especially after Van Persie’s crucial header. The Netherlands also reached a milestone during the game, becoming the eighth team in World Cup history to score 100 goals.
The Netherlands’ win against Sweden propelled them to the top of Group F with four points from two matches. Their next challenge will be against Tunisia in the final group-stage fixture.
