The Ministry of Defence highlighted the growing maritime collaboration between India and the Netherlands as a Dutch naval ship, HNLMS De Ruyter, docked in Kochi with a senior delegation from the European nation. The frigate, part of the Royal Netherlands Navy, reached Kochi on May 4, coinciding with the visit of Dutch naval officials to the Southern Naval Command. The delegation, led by Major General Rob De Wit and Ambassador Marisa Gerards, engaged in discussions with Indian naval authorities on mutual maritime interests.
The arrival of HNLMS De Ruyter was marked by a ceremonial reception at Kochi Harbour, where the ship was welcomed by Indian Navy interceptor craft and a naval band. The vessel is currently on a five-month deployment in the Indo-Pacific region, aiming to participate in various maritime exercises alongside partner countries. The Dutch delegation’s visit also included paying respects at the SNC War Memorial in Kochi on the Netherlands’ National Remembrance Day, honoring fallen heroes.
During the ongoing interactions, Rear Admiral Prakash Gopalan, Chief of Staff at the Southern Naval Command, met with the Dutch delegation to explore avenues for strengthening naval cooperation. Discussions revolved around training collaboration, sharing best practices, and potential industrial partnerships in the shipbuilding sector. The visit further involves engagements at professional training facilities within the Southern Naval Command, showcasing advanced simulators and training infrastructure.
As part of the agenda, the Dutch delegation is set to visit Cochin Shipyard Limited to gain insights into India’s shipbuilding capabilities and discuss potential industrial collaborations. The Defence Ministry outlined plans for professional and social exchanges between personnel from both navies to foster camaraderie and operational synergy. Before departing from Kochi, HNLMS De Ruyter will conduct a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with an Indian naval vessel to enhance interoperability.
