The Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported 452 confirmed Ebola cases, with 82 deaths, as per the latest health ministry report. On June 4, 71 new cases, including 21 deaths, were recorded in Ituri and North Kivu provinces, indicating ongoing community transmission. Currently, 258 patients are receiving care, while eight have recovered.
Contact tracing remains a significant challenge, with only 57.8% of the 4,766 contacts being followed up in the three provinces. The response in the DRC faces obstacles such as resistance to post-mortem swabbing, limited Ebola treatment capacity, and shortages of essential supplies. Additionally, a funding gap of 21.5 million US dollars hampers the efforts.
Uganda has confirmed three new Ebola cases, bringing the total infections to 19, according to the Ministry of Health. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization have launched a 518 million US dollar plan to aid African countries in preparing for and responding to Ebola outbreaks. So far, 34 health workers have been infected, with seven fatalities and six recoveries.
