The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has expanded to the provinces of Tshopo and Haut-Uele, Health Minister Roger Kamba confirmed. Patients from affected areas are moving towards Kisangani and the Wamba area, extending the outbreak response to these regions. The epidemic is described as “very active,” with challenges in determining its peak due to high population density and mobility.
Kamba emphasized the ongoing growth phase in Ituri and active case increases in North Kivu Province. Surveillance at entry points and limiting high-risk movements are crucial to control the spread to new areas. South Kivu Province may soon see the end of the outbreak, having reported no new cases since May 26, as per the latest situation report.
The death toll in the DRC from the outbreak has reached 600, with 1,759 confirmed cases. Currently, 750 patients are in isolation or hospitalization, with a high bed occupancy rate of 94 percent, according to health authorities.
