England and Wales Cricket Board’s CEO, Richard Gould, explained that Brendon McCullum was removed from the men’s Test head coach role by invoking the notice period in his contract due to recent poor results. Despite this, McCullum will continue as head coach of the white-ball teams.
Gould expressed gratitude for McCullum’s work over the past four years, emphasizing that decisions were solely result-driven. The decision followed England’s string of defeats in red-ball matches, losing seven of their last nine Test games.
Defending the board’s choice not to dismiss McCullum immediately after England’s Ashes defeat, Gould highlighted the commitment of the coaching staff and players to improve. He stressed the importance of providing opportunities for staff and players to rectify performance issues.
When asked about the possibility of a unified head coach for both red and white-ball formats in the future, Gould acknowledged the workload in modern international cricket. While not ruling out the idea, he emphasized the significant pressure and scrutiny associated with such roles.
Gould also confirmed that England men’s managing director, Rob Key, will continue in his role despite recent changes in the coaching staff. He praised Key’s professionalism and constructive relationships within the team, emphasizing a shared focus on driving performance.
