The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas in connection with a criminal-linked syndicate case. Shantanu was questioned at the CGO Complex in Kolkata for over 10-and-a-half hours before his arrest. He will be presented before a court on Friday.
The ED had been summoning Shantanu Biswas, the former Officer-in-Charge of Kalighat Police Station, multiple times for questioning regarding money laundering investigations into a criminal-linked syndicate associated with Sona Pappu alias Biswajit Poddar. Despite repeated summons, Shantanu had been evading the ED.
Investigators discovered financial transactions involving Shantanu Biswas and Sona Pappu, along with his associates, during the investigation. Additionally, documents related to this case were found with businessman Joy Kamdar, who was arrested for financial transaction offenses. Last month, the ED conducted raids at Shantanu’s residence in connection with the Sona Pappu case.
Shantanu Biswas, along with his two sons, was summoned by the ED after the search operation at his residence. However, they did not appear before the agency. Shantanu had also been summoned by the ED earlier in connection with a sand smuggling investigation but failed to appear, sending his lawyer instead. Despite citing official engagements, Shantanu was arrested by the ED after appearing before their office on Thursday.
