The Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out a raid at the residence of ex-West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee in south Kolkata. This action comes in connection with the school teacher recruitment case before the Assembly elections. Chatterjee, a former Trinamool Congress secretary general, had been summoned by the ED multiple times but allegedly avoided appearing, citing illness.
An ED team also conducted a raid at Prasanna Roy’s office in New Town, who is implicated as a ‘middleman’ in the recruitment case. Chatterjee had previously expressed willingness to be questioned via video call or at home due to illness. Following this, the ED team reached his residence in Naktala.
In July 2022, Chatterjee was arrested by the ED for his alleged involvement in the multi-crore SSC teacher recruitment scam. His close associate Arpita Mukherjee was also arrested, with Rs 20 crore in cash found at her residence during the investigation. Chatterjee was granted bail in September last year by the Calcutta High Court, but his release was delayed per a Supreme Court directive.
