Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Jassim Al-Thani have urged the United States and Iran to demonstrate “responsibility” and “wisdom” during the current sensitive period. In a recent phone conversation, the diplomats emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions to resolve conflicts and supported ongoing negotiations between the two nations, as per a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
The officials also discussed the progress of talks between Washington and Tehran, highlighting the crucial role of political resolutions in maintaining regional security and stability. They stressed the importance of safeguarding the interests of the people in the region through peaceful means, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Following joint military actions by Israel and the US against Iran on February 28, a ceasefire was established on April 8. However, subsequent peace talks held in Pakistan did not lead to a final agreement. Despite diplomatic endeavors, recent clashes near the Strait of Hormuz involved US attacks on Iranian targets and retaliatory strikes by Iran using missiles and drones against American vessels.
Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps Navy announced a successful operation involving ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones targeting US destroyers, resulting in significant damage to American ships. This prompted the retreat of three US destroyers from the area near the Strait of Hormuz. The US Central Command responded, stating that their forces defended against Iranian attacks and emphasized readiness to protect American troops while avoiding further escalation.
US President Donald Trump confirmed that no harm was inflicted on the American destroyers during their passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
