The Election Commission of India has set the schedule for the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections from 16 Local Authorities’ Constituencies. The polling is scheduled for June 18, with the vote count on June 22. The entire electoral process must be completed before late June.
The constituencies include areas like Solapur, Ahmednagar, Thane, Jalgaon, and more, where members’ terms have expired. These upcoming elections aim to fill vacancies that have accumulated since 2022. Due to delays in local body elections, representation for these areas had been suspended.
The Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra confirmed that the 75% functionality and elector threshold criteria have been met in all 16 constituencies. This fulfillment allows the democratic process to resume after a prolonged hiatus. The Model Code of Conduct is now in force in these constituencies until the election cycle concludes on June 25.
The Mahayuti alliance’s recent success in local self-government elections is expected to impact the state council elections. The ruling alliance is anticipated to secure more seats against the Maha Vikas Aghadi. Parties like BJP and Shiv Sena are strategizing to claim seats in their regional strongholds. The Opposition faces a challenging scenario in defending historical strongholds amidst the “winner-takes-all” game of local body council seats.
With new members sworn in, the ruling alliance is close to an absolute majority. Winning the majority of the remaining local body seats would grant them complete legislative hegemony. This majority would facilitate the passage of crucial policies and reforms smoothly.
