The Election Commission of India has revealed the timetable for the Rajya Sabha biennial elections to fill 37 vacant seats across 10 states. Polling is scheduled for March 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with vote counting on the same day at 5:00 p.m.
The current terms of 37 Council of States members from 10 states are ending in April 2026. To manage the upcoming vacancies, the Commission has outlined a detailed election schedule. The notification for the elections will be issued on February 26, with nominations accepted until March 5 and scrutiny on March 6.
Candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 9. Only specific violet sketch pens provided by the Returning Officer will be allowed for marking preferences on ballot papers. The Commission has emphasized the deployment of observers to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process.
Representing states like Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and others, notable members whose terms are concluding include Upendra Kushwaha, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Tiruchi Siva, and others. The Commission has stressed the importance of adhering to election guidelines and ensuring the timely completion of the Rajya Sabha elections to uphold their integrity.
