The Election Commission of India clarified the situation regarding a notice sent to Nobel laureate Amartya Sen by Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Sen, a 92-year-old economist, was not required to physically appear for a hearing due to a spelling error in his enumeration form. The Commission directed officials to rectify the error without requiring Sen to visit a hearing center.

Abhishek Banerjee had alleged at a public rally in Birbhum district that a hearing notice was served to Amartya Sen. Sen, who resides in the US but is still a voter in Bolpur-Santiniketan, had last voted during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Banerjee criticized the Election Commission for sending a notice to Sen, highlighting Sen’s contributions to India’s global reputation.
