The Election Commission of India refuted claims by Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee that an elderly voter died due to being manhandled by central forces at a polling booth in Udaynarayanpur. Banerjee alleged that the man collapsed after being pushed by the forces while attempting to vote. However, the ECI stated that the voter, Purna Chandra Dolui, passed away due to sudden illness after casting his vote.
The ECI clarified that Purna Chandra Dolui, aged 82, fell near the voting compartment due to illness after voting and was rushed to Amta Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The incident occurred at Booth No. 245 of 182-Udaynarayanpur AC in Howrah Rural District. The General Observer for Udaynarayanpur Assembly constituency confirmed these details.
Leaders from the West Bengal BJP accused the Trinamool Congress of fabricating violence during the second phase of polling. They argued that the ruling party aimed to portray an illness-related death as a result of central forces’ actions. Abhishek Banerjee had earlier criticized the central forces for allegedly intimidating voters since the start of polling.
Abhishek Banerjee condemned the central forces for their behavior at polling booths, accusing them of mistreating civilians, including women and the elderly. He likened their actions to the violence seen in Sitalkuchi in 2021 and warned of consequences for such actions. Banerjee vowed that those responsible for such acts would face legal repercussions.
