A day before the first phase of Assembly elections in West Bengal, the Election Commission has relaxed restrictions on motorcycle riding. Office-goers with valid identity cards are now permitted to use motorcycles during the restricted period. The Commission had previously granted exemptions to app-based motorcycle riders and food delivery personnel.

In a recent notification, the Election Commission imposed strict restrictions on motorbike riding leading up to the polls. The measures aim to curb bike rallies during the election period and ensure voter safety and security. Bike rallies and motorcycle processions are banned in sensitive areas two days before polling, with general motorcycle movement restricted from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The Commission has prohibited pillion riding on motorcycles between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. for two days before polling, except for specific purposes like transporting school students or attending medical emergencies. Individuals seeking exemptions beyond specified categories must obtain written permission from the police. Strict enforcement of these guidelines is mandated by the Commission.

The first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections will take place on Thursday, covering 152 Assembly constituencies across multiple districts with heightened security measures in place.
