The Election Commission of India (ECI) recently held a one-day conference for media and communication officers, bringing together around 200 officials from 10 states and Union Territories. The aim was to enhance election-related communication and combat misinformation in the digital era. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar emphasized the need for transparent and accurate communication during the electoral process.
Media Nodal Officers (MNOs), Social Media Nodal Officers (SMNOs), District Media Nodal Officers, District Public Relations Officers (PROs), and senior officials from State Departments of Public Relations (DPRs) participated in the conference. CEC Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioner Dr Vivek Joshi addressed the attendees, highlighting the importance of adhering to constitutional and electoral laws for transparent governance. They also warned against the dissemination of false information on social media platforms.
CEC Gyanesh Kumar underscored the Election Commission’s commitment to upholding the principles of the Constitution and electoral laws in a transparent manner. He urged the officials to actively combat misinformation and uphold public trust in the electoral system. Dr Vivek Joshi raised concerns about the growing threat of artificial intelligence and misleading digital content that aim to erode trust in democratic institutions.
The conference included sessions on communication strategies throughout the election cycle, covering topics such as electoral roll management and polling procedures. Participants received training on drafting effective press releases, leveraging traditional and social media for official communication, and countering misinformation. Practical demonstrations on electoral processes and a guided exhibition walkthrough were also part of the event.
