The Election Commission of India has initiated the third phase of the ‘Special Intensive Revision’ campaign in 16 states and three Union Territories from June 30 to July 29 to ensure the accuracy of electoral rolls. Maharashtra will play a crucial role in this phase, with officials set to verify records of around 9.86 crore voters through door-to-door visits.
Booth Level Officers will conduct personal visits to every household to verify details of the 9,86,44,413 registered voters in Maharashtra. The Election Commission has urged political parties to appoint Booth Level Agents to assist in supervising the process alongside the Officers to maintain transparency.
The revision process, aligned with ongoing Census activities, aims to optimize field machinery and personnel usage. Scheduled to start in June, the process will culminate with the final list publication in October 2026. The goal is to create a “zero-error” voter list by identifying and removing duplicate registrations, updating records of deceased individuals, and ensuring inclusion of newly eligible citizens.
The Election Commission has called on political parties to ensure their agents are present at every polling station to facilitate a fair and democratic revision process. This initiative is crucial for Maharashtra, a state with significant internal migration and urbanization challenges that often result in discrepancies in voter data. By coordinating with the Census infrastructure, the government aims to enhance data integrity beyond annual updates.
