The Election Commission of India has directed a new election at a polling station in Assam’s Karimganj North Assembly constituency. The decision came after the April 9 voting at the station was declared void, although specific reasons were not disclosed. Typically, such actions are taken due to disruptions, procedural violations, or complaints impacting the voting process.
The Commission invoked provisions under Section 58(2)(A) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, to invalidate the poll at the identified station. The affected polling station is situated at Baby Land English High School under the 123-Karimganj North Assembly constituency. A fresh poll has been scheduled for April 11, with voting hours set between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
Authorities have been instructed to ensure widespread publicity of the re-poll in the concerned area. Political parties and candidates will be informed in writing to facilitate a smooth voting process. Strict adherence to guidelines outlined in Chapter 13 of the Handbook for Returning Officers, 2023, has been mandated during the re-poll.
The Commission stressed the importance of procedural safeguards to uphold transparency and credibility in the electoral process. Officials, including Observers and District Election Officers, have been tasked to stay informed and ensure compliance with the Commission’s directives. This development occurs amidst crucial Assembly elections in Assam, with significant voter turnout reported in various constituencies.
