Election Commission’s flying squads and security agencies in West Bengal have confiscated cash, liquor, and other items amounting to Rs 510.10 crore. This seizure surpasses the Rs 339 crore recovered during the 2021 Assembly elections. Since March 15, seizures include cash of Rs 30 crore, liquor valued at Rs 126.85 crore, drugs worth Rs 110.12 crore, precious metal amounting to Rs 58.28 crore, and other freebies totaling Rs 184.85 crore.
To ensure fair elections, over 2,728 Flying Squad Teams (FSTs) are deployed in the state to address inducement-related complaints within 100 minutes. Additionally, 3,142 Static Surveillance Teams (SSTs) have been set up at various locations to conduct surprise checks. Special operations target the production, storage, and distribution of illicit liquor.
The Election Seizure Management System (ESMS) was activated on February 26 to uphold inducement-free polling and strict adherence to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). Ahead of the April 29 voting in 142 Assembly constituencies, the Election Commission plans to enhance surveillance by placing CCTV coverage on the approach roads to critical or hypersensitive polling stations.
The installation of CCTVs outside polling stations aims to prevent voter intimidation and monitor activities on approach roads. The number of CCTV installations will vary based on the polling station’s sensitivity. The results of the West Bengal Assembly elections for 294 seats will be announced on May 4.
