The Election Commission of India hinted at the possibility of conducting the upcoming Assam Assembly elections in a single phase for voter convenience and local conditions. The Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, leading an ECI team visiting Assam, discussed poll preparedness with state officials and political party representatives. It was suggested that the elections might occur before the Rongali Bihu festival to encourage high voter turnout and ensure smooth polling operations.
In a bid to enhance transparency, the Election Commission announced the introduction of 100% webcasting of polling stations in Assam for the first time. This move aims to facilitate fair elections and provide real-time voter turnout data at regular intervals. CEC Gyanesh Kumar emphasized the importance of assessing logistical and security aspects to finalize the poll schedule, considering voter convenience and climatic conditions.
Assam is set to witness improved election monitoring with the release of actual voting percentages every two hours on polling day. The Commission is also evaluating security arrangements, central armed police force deployment, and the election machinery’s readiness at the district level. This routine exercise by the ECI aims to ensure peaceful, transparent, and inclusive elections in Assam, emphasizing the importance of voter participation without any hindrances.
